Black seed oil has featured in research on bone-turnover markers. A six-month study compared the oil, curcumin and their combination alongside standard treatment.
Study design
Triple-blind randomised trial; 120 women; four groups; six months; alendronate, calcium and vitamin D used alongside the study interventions.
Reported findings
A 2022 trial assigned 120 postmenopausal women with low bone density to placebo, curcumin, black seed oil or their combination. All received standard bone treatment. An alkaline-phosphatase result favoured oil and combination groups initially, but after adjustment remained significant only for the combination. Other bone markers did not differ significantly between groups.
Interpreting the result
The strongest adjusted result concerned the combination rather than oil alone. The study assessed biomarkers, not fracture prevention, and all groups received underlying treatment.
Why this study is useful
This study is useful because it separates an oil-only group from a combination group. That structure helps readers see which findings belong to black seed oil and which belong to a combined intervention. Bone-turnover markers offer one window into research, while outcomes such as fractures require a different kind of follow-up.
