Black seed oil research includes cholesterol and other blood lipids. A crossover trial reported improvements in several measures in women with overweight or obesity.
Study design
Double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial; 39 completers; oil and placebo periods of eight weeks; four-week washout; an iso-caloric diet.
Reported findings
In a crossover trial reported in 2021, women with overweight or obesity received black seed oil and placebo during separate eight-week periods, with a washout between them. Thirty-nine completed the study. HDL, LDL and the total-cholesterol-to-HDL ratio improved with oil, as did systolic blood pressure; diastolic pressure did not.
Interpreting the result
This study measured risk markers in a selected population. It did not establish reduced cardiovascular events. A crossover design also requires attention to period effects and whether the first intervention influences the second.
Why this study is useful
A crossover study lets participants receive both the oil and the comparison treatment at different times. That can help account for individual differences. Here the researchers examined a full lipid pattern rather than one isolated number, offering a more detailed picture of why black seed oil attracts interest in cardiometabolic research.
