Black seed oil extract and metabolic markers: an eight-week trial

Black seed oil is being explored across several aspects of metabolic health. An eight-week trial measured glucose control, lipids, blood pressure and body measurements.

Study design

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial; 43 adults with type 2 diabetes; oil-extract capsules versus sunflower-oil placebo; eight weeks.

Reported findings

A 2021 placebo-controlled trial studied 43 adults with type 2 diabetes for eight weeks. The oil-extract group showed improvements in HbA1c, fasting glucose, several lipid measures, blood pressure and waist circumference. HDL and the HOMA-IR insulin-resistance measure did not change significantly.

Interpreting the result

The sample was small and the study was short. Several markers improved, but not all. These findings do not provide a basis for changing diabetes medication or establish long-term complication prevention.

Why this study is useful

Metabolic research looks at connected measurements such as blood glucose, lipids and waist circumference. Studying several of them together can reveal a broader pattern, provided positive and unchanged results are reported side by side. This trial is one reason black seed oil continues to attract research attention.
